Managing Director Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL)

Thiru Ashish Chatterjee, I.A.S., is the Additional Chief Secretary to Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). A 1999-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu Cadre, he brings over 25 years of distinguished experience in public administration, urban governance, infrastructure development, and strategic policy implementation across both the State and Central Governments.

An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, he has held several key leadership positions, including serving as District Collector of Villupuram, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur districts. He has also contributed significantly to urban development and city governance through his roles in the Corporation of Chennai, gaining extensive experience in planning and implementing large-scale public infrastructure initiatives.

At the Central Government level, he served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, where he played an important role in policy formulation and sectoral oversight. He later served as Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Steel, contributing to financial administration and strategic governance while serving on the Boards of major public sector enterprises, including SAIL and NMDC.

At CMRL, Thiru Ashish Chatterjee is leading the organization's mission to strengthen Chennai's urban mobility through the successful implementation of the Metro Rail expansion programme. Under his leadership, CMRL continues to advance world-class, sustainable, and integrated public transportation solutions that enhance connectivity and support the city's long-term infrastructure development.
